Have you ever found yourself in the midst of a “great life,” yet feeling stifled, joyless, or disconnected? You’re successful, engaged in meaningful activities, but wake up on autopilot, going through the motions. Then, a book recommendation like The Crossroads of Should and Must lands in your hands, nudging you to pause and ask yourself—why? Why do I feel this way?
Looking back on my own life, I see a journey full of challenges, triumphs, and plenty of lessons learned. One truth has always stood firm: this is my life, and I’m responsible for how I live it. That realization hit me hard—was I truly living my life, or was I simply fulfilling roles and expectations? A job, a career, a calling…where was I in all of it?
As an overachiever, I spent years pursuing excellence—whether as a gymnast, first-chair musician, or the youngest in my area to become a full-time minister. I graduated early, married, started a family, and achieved what society would call “success.” But after watching my children grow into incredible adults, I was left wondering—what now?
Driven by my task-oriented, overthinking nature, I set out on a new course: to intentionally create a life aligned with who I truly am. My journey led me to the library most Saturdays, where I read countless books, completed reflection exercises, and wrestled with the truths that surfaced. I didn’t just read; I acted, refined, and tested my conclusions with a trusted “board of directors” in my life.
What emerged was clarity and confidence in my true calling, grounded in two fundamental truths:
- There is good in all of us, and we all have unique abilities that bring value to the world.
- The key is discovering what those abilities are and aligning your life in a way that allows them to flourish. It’s not always easy to see this for ourselves, but once uncovered, it can transform how we live and contribute.
- Who we become is often shaped by what was missing in our own lives.
- My own challenges taught me resilience and self-reliance. Because of this, I have a deep understanding of internal struggles, and I find immense fulfillment in guiding and cheering others on as they navigate their own paths.
This journey of aligning my life with my values and calling has brought me profound satisfaction, peace, and joy. What about you? Are you living a life that reflects your true calling? If not, what’s holding you back?
I’d love to hear your story and help you uncover the clarity and courage needed to step into the life you were meant to live.
