Don’t Make Assumptions: Embracing Intentionality

The third principle of The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz—Don’t Make Assumptions—aligns powerfully with my core value of intentionality. Assumptions, while seemingly harmless, often pave the way for misunderstandings, unnecessary stress, and fractured relationships. Living intentionally means fostering clarity, curiosity, and thoughtful communication instead of operating on unspoken or inaccurate beliefs.

The Cost of Assumptions

How often have you found yourself assuming someone’s thoughts, motives, or intentions? Perhaps you’ve felt slighted by a friend’s tone, jumped to conclusions about a colleague’s silence, or assumed the worst in a challenging situation. Assumptions may feel like shortcuts to understanding, but more often than not, they create stories in our minds that may not align with reality. These unspoken narratives can fuel anxiety, resentment, and conflict—robbing us of peace, connection and time.

In my own life, I’ve experienced firsthand how dangerous assumptions can be. For years, I would hesitate to ask questions for fear of appearing vulnerable or creating discomfort. Instead, I let assumptions dictate my decisions, often leading to confusion and hurt feelings. Over time, I realized that replacing assumptions with intentional inquiry—asking thoughtful, open questions—was key to living a more intentional and stress-free life.

Intentionality Through Curiosity and Clarity

Living with intentionality means showing up to conversations and relationships with curiosity, not conclusions. Instead of assuming we know what someone else is thinking or feeling, we pause, ask questions, and seek to understand. This simple shift creates space for trust, deeper communication, and stronger relationships.

For example:

  • Instead of assuming, “They’re upset with me,” you could ask, “Is something on your mind?”
  • Instead of presuming, “I won’t be able to do this,” you could reframe with, “What resources or support do I need to make this happen?”

Intentional inquiry empowers us to see situations clearly, make thoughtful decisions, and honor our values in the process.

Replace Assumptions with Inquiry

Be intentional about releasing the habit of assumption-making and embracing intentionality in your thoughts, communication, and decision-making. Through guided reflection and actionable practices, work to replace guesswork with clarity by exercising these tools:

  • Open Communication: Learning to ask questions instead of jumping to conclusions.
  • Mindful Awareness: Noticing when assumptions arise and pausing to challenge those thoughts.
  • Intentional Decision-Making: Approaching situations with curiosity and gathering information before taking action.

By adopting these tools, it can help you to experience less stress, improved relationships, and decisions that better align with your core values.

Intentionality in Action

When we commit to not making assumptions, we live with greater authenticity, trust, and purpose. This practice transforms our relationships, clears mental clutter, and allows us to focus on what truly matters: living a life aligned with our values.
