Year-End Reflection: A Practice of Intentional Growth

Inspired by John Maxwell’s wisdom, I’ve made it an annual tradition to dedicate time during the last week of the year to reflect on the past 12 months. This hour-long session allows me to pause, celebrate, and realign with my values and goals.

I begin by pulling out my calendar and reviewing the year month by month. I note the events I attended, gatherings with family and friends, trips, and appointments. I also take stock of the time I devoted to non-profits, volunteering, and “me” time. As I do this, I reflect on the goals I set, the personal growth I achieved, and the unexpected surprises that shaped my journey. I also identify moments where I veered off course, using them as learning opportunities for the year ahead.

Bringing the Year to Life

I conduct this process in a quiet space, dedicating one page to visually animate my year on paper. I highlight key moments that brought me joy and underscore areas where I could have done more. Then, I revisit the page and circle the experiences that make me smile the most, allowing gratitude to guide my reflection.

Each year, I also choose a theme—a guiding word, phrase, or quote—and reflect on how it inspired me throughout the year. This theme serves as a touchstone, helping me align my actions with my intentions. I take time to cement my theme for the upcoming year, ensuring it resonates with my goals and aspirations.

Gratitude and Growth

I conclude the session by sitting in silence for a few moments, focusing on gratitude. Even in years filled with challenges or sorrow, there is always something to be thankful for. I reflect on what these challenges taught me and the qualities I want to emulate in honor of those who have left this earth.

Finally, I close with a positive affirmation and a well-deserved pat on the back. This practice leaves me feeling energized and prepared to step into the new year with clarity, purpose, and hope.

An Invitation to Reflect

This year-end ritual is not just about looking back; it’s about intentionally creating space to learn, grow, and celebrate the journey. It’s a reminder that every experience, whether joyful or challenging, shapes the person we are becoming.
