Yesterday, January 10th, is often referred to as “Quitting Day”—the day when many abandon their New Year’s resolutions or goals. It’s startling to think that, on average, people give up after just 10 days. Why does this happen? A few reasons come to mind:
- The goal was unrealistic.
- The goal wasn’t tied to their values.
- They didn’t map out a plan.
- They didn’t have a cheerleader for support.
When setting a goal or resolution—whether at the start of the year or any other time—it’s essential to approach it with intention and mindfulness.
Four Key Factors for Sticking to Your Goals
1. Goals Need to Be Realistic
To give yourself the best chance at success, set goals that are both achievable and aligned with your core values. When a goal reflects what truly matters to you, it becomes more meaningful and fulfilling to pursue. For example, if adventure is one of your core values, setting a goal to hibernate all winter may not feel authentic or achievable. Do you know what your core values are?
2. Map Out a Plan
Goals don’t accomplish themselves! Take time to create a realistic plan that outlines how you’ll achieve your objective. Break it into manageable steps, set timelines, and consider adding rewards for milestones along the way. These simple actions can reignite your motivation and keep you moving forward.
3. Find a Cheerleader
Cheerleaders aren’t just for sports! Having someone in your corner—a friend, family member, partner, coach, or colleague—can be a powerful source of encouragement. They’ll celebrate your wins, acknowledge your struggles, and give you that much-needed pat on the back when you achieve something great.
4. Stay True to Your Values
When your goals align with your values, they’re not only easier to stick to—they’re also more satisfying to accomplish. Reflect on what truly matters to you, and let that guide your resolutions.
Making Strides in ’25
My personal slogan for this year is: Making Strides in ’25!
As someone who continuously sets both personal and professional goals, I’ve learned to honor the process—even when it takes longer than expected. Reflecting on 2024, I celebrated many accomplishments, but I also recognized that some goals took more time than I initially planned. It reminded me of the fable of the tortoise and the hare: slow and steady truly wins the race.
Studies confirm that many people sprint into the new year with big, bold resolutions, only to burn out quickly—hence the name “Quitting Day.” Instead, I’m focusing on making steady, intentional strides toward my goals in 2025.
Let’s face it: we all have unique circumstances, and no two people are on the same journey. Just like we don’t all wear the same shoe size, our strides will look different. Some areas of life may take larger steps forward, while others progress more slowly—and that’s okay. What matters is that we’re moving forward.
