Reflections on clarity, self-trust, and honoring what you see
There’s a moment in life when you hear something that resonates so deeply, it becomes a compass. For me, this quote by the brilliant Maya Angelou has long been one of those guideposts:
“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
At first, it felt like a protective shield — a way to guard my heart. As I’ve grown and deepened my self-awareness, it’s become something more: a call to presence, to discernment, and to clarity.
👁️🗨️ Noticing is a Form of Self-Respect
People show us who they are — not just with their words, but with their energy, consistency, and how they treat others (and us). When we pause and really pay attention, without the urge to explain, fix, or justify what we see, we honor both them and ourselves.
We don’t need to mold stories around someone’s potential.
✨ Awareness is not judgment. It’s clarity. ✨
🧘♀️ Discernment Over Cynicism
Believing someone the first time isn’t about becoming cynical or hard-hearted — it’s about becoming grounded in truth. It’s saying:
“I trust myself enough to notice.”
As a coach and yoga guide, I often witness this inner tug-of-war in others (and yes, I’ve felt it too). The desire to extend grace versus the need to acknowledge red flags. You can be kind and clear. Compassionate and boundaried.
You can see someone honestly — and still choose peace over proximity.
🪞 A Gentle Mirror Inward
This quote also nudges us to look within:
What am I showing the world?
Are my actions aligned with my values, or am I sending mixed signals — even to myself?
Self-honesty isn’t always comfortable, but it’s powerful. The way we move through the world, what we tolerate, how we spend our energy — all of it speaks louder than words.
🌻 Let Clarity Be Your Compass
In relationships, friendships, workspaces — let this be your reminder:
💛 You are not too sensitive.
💛 You are not overthinking.
💛 You are attuned.
You don’t have to see the worst in people — just the truth. That truth allows you to move with confidence, calm, and care.
✨ My Offer to You
Whether through coaching or yoga, I walk beside those who are learning to trust what they know and see — to live in alignment with their values, their energy, and their truth. If that’s you, I’d be honored to hold space for your journey.
Let’s honor what we notice. Let’s trust our clarity.
Let’s believe them — the first time. 🤍
