This week, I was reminded of the powerful quote:
“We rise by lifting others.” — Robert Ingersoll
I wholeheartedly believe in the essence of this statement. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community and the profound impact we can have when we uplift and support one another.
Through kindness and generosity, mentorship and guidance, empathy and understanding, collaboration and teamwork, and self-care, we harness the power to make a difference—not just in individual lives but in the world as a whole.
I have lived by this philosophy in these key areas of my life:
- Career
- Family
- Community
- My business
Learning from Leaders Who Lifted Me
Throughout my corporate career, I had two exceptional managers who profoundly shaped me—each in their own way and a decade apart.
The first embodied this philosophy completely. He encouraged me to pursue growth, offered kind words of appreciation, and provided thoughtful guidance. He wasn’t just a mentor; he was a leader who truly cared. Under his leadership, I didn’t just grow in my career—I grew as a person. His impact extended beyond me; even my children speak of him often because of the values he instilled in me.
The second manager built upon that foundation. She brought authenticity, energy, and a leadership style that encouraged thought-provoking questions. She showed me that being a strong leader means embracing who you truly are. Work and personal life may be separate, but at the core, we are one individual. When we show up as our best selves, we elevate our teams, our work, and our impact.
Raising My Children to Rise on Their Own
Having two incredible young adults, some might assume I was a “rockstar” parent—ha! But let’s be real: parenting comes with challenges.
From the moment I became a parent, I knew I wanted to provide my children with more—more love, more security, more encouragement—than what I had growing up. Many parents say they want their kids to have a better life, but what does that really mean?
For me, it wasn’t just about providing for them physically, but also mentally and emotionally. I made time to listen, cheer them on, and support their choices—whether in music, sports, academics, dating, religion, politics, or careers. By validating their interests and giving them space to explore, I laid the foundation for self-confidence and personal growth. Watching them embrace their individuality and passions has been one of my greatest joys.
The Power of Community
Community is everything. It’s not just about family or close friends—it’s about neighbors, colleagues, mentors, and shared-interest groups.
For me, that includes my fellow Toastmasters, yoga practitioners, nonprofit supporters, and so many more. Taking an interest in people, offering words of encouragement, and simply asking how someone is doing—and truly listening to their answer—can be transformative.
The world needs more of us lifting others up. When we support and empower one another, we all rise together.
Lifting Up My Clients
As a life coach, it’s my mission to help my clients rise up. Progress doesn’t always come in massive leaps—it’s often the small, consistent steps that lead to meaningful transformation.
Recognizing and celebrating those steps builds momentum. And momentum is powerful—as it builds, energy is released, self-belief strengthens, and joy in the process emerges.
